The Van Nelle Ontwerpfabriek

SmartDC is housed in the Van Nelle Ontwerpfabriek in the Spaanse Polder in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

The Van Nelle building has the status of national monument and is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Originally build between 1925 and 1931 the building still has a surprisingly modern look with it's off angle walking bridges between the 2 main buildings. The inside of the the building is modern and spacious.

Power Capacity at Van Nelle

For years the Van Nelle Factory was used for producing coffee, tea and tobacco. This is the reason for the large power capacity available on this location. Only the harbour area of Rotterdam and the Van Nelle factory have a similar high power output available. This was a key element in choosing the Van Nelle location to house SmartDC. The option of having plenty of power available without the need for expanding upon the existing power grid made this location very attractive.

SmartDC at Van Nelle

SmartDC is housed in the former distribution center of the Van Nelle complex. Originally build as an expansion to the original complex in 1974. The distribution center was used for short term storage of the products made in the factory.

After the distribution center closed it was used by a logistics company for a few years. In 2009 SmartDC obtained the rights to the property and started building it's brand new datacenter in the distribution hall.


The distribution hall offers SmartDC enough room to expand (up to a total floor space of 36,000 sq ft). With the extra benefit of the large power supply this location ensures that SmartDC has enough room to expand in the years to come, at one of the most beautiful and practical locations in The Netherlands.
